| Halfway between Catania and Messina
(about 20 minutes by highway or by train) Giardini Naxos can be reached in less than one
hour from Fontanarossa airport in Catania. There are some forty hotels of modern
structures with a bedspace of more than five thousand rooms and a summer residential
system with more than twelve thousand rooms. Luxurious restaurants, pizzerias, bars,
sophisticated discos, elegant and country-style resorts that preserve the traditional
elements of the Sicilian culture.The contrasts, often sharp, that have characterized the
social and economic life in Sicily, are clearly represented in Giardini Naxos by the
presence of monumental architectures "fin de siècle" next to poorer
constructions, but rich in colours and ornamental elements that cannot be connected to an
"official" cultural background, but are a spontaneousdecorative expression of a
typical Mediterranean fishermen village. There are elegant villas, once used as holiday
residences by the upper classes. Farther on, we can see remains of the past, like the
defensive seventeenth-century Spanish bastion, surprisingly and perfectly integrated in
the surrounding environment, although it is a typically military building. |
