| The "Parco dell'Etna" was
established in Sicily in March 1987. The Etna is not only the highest, active volcano in
Europe, but it is also a mountain where it is possible to find recent lava flows as well
as old lava flows where Larch Pines, Beeches and Birch trees have grown. To protect this
unique natural enviroment and the extrordinary landscape surrounding the vulcano, the
Parco dell'Etna was divided into four areas. Area "A" includes 19,000 hectares,
almost all of which of public property. There are no traces of human activity. It is a
large area and hosts various birds of prey, such as the royal eagle. Area "B"
includes 26,000 hectares and is made up of small, private agricultural fields. It is rich
of farm houses and austere plantation houses, that is signs of the presense of man since
ancient times. In addition to areas A and B, there are 14.000 hectares belonging to areas
"C" and "D" which could be used for tourist facilities. (content taken from Mount Etna park) |
