Noa originating from Sicana vocabulary
means maggesse (fallow land), and refers to the conspicuous wheat production
of the area that was the reason for the Greek colonisation.
With the advent of the Romans the name changed to Novalia (field of wheat) and for the
Arabs it was called Nouah (garden, vegetable garden, flower).
During medieval times it was called Nucaria or Noara until it took todays name of
Novara.
History

Sperlinga rock, document the existence of a Mesolithic settlement.

inhabitants Neoni.
9th century, the Saracenes erect a castle that becomes the new town centre for its
citizens and therefore substituting the one that was situated in the Contrada Casalini,
which was inhabited during the whole Byzantine period.
1061-72, a Lombardi colony of Catholic religion with Latin rites probably settled where
the present-day town is situated.

Maria Nucaria; its the first Cistercian building to be constructed in Sicily.

was already cited as castrum (castle) Nucariae.
14th century, the lands and castle become first property of the Palazzi family then of
Vinciguerra Aragona.
17th century, the village arrives at the peak of development. In fact most of the
buildings conserved until this day are from this period. |
